- World ID 2.0 will combine developer feedback with concepts in the white paper
- Shopify, Reddit, Telegram, Minecraft will let users sign in with a World ID
- Worldcoin only uses eye scans to verify users the first time, doesn’t save them
Crypto startup Worldcoin, which was cofounded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, will undergo a monumental upgrade involving a new multi-level verification system for World ID, CoinDesk wrote. The leading medium talked to Tiago Sada, head of product at a company backing Worldcoin called Tools for Humanity.
According to him, World ID 2.0 is epic in that it will combine developer feedback and concepts initially reflected in the project’s white paper.
Shopify, Minecraft, Reddit start using World ID
According to Sada, corporations such as Shopify, Reddit, Mercado Libre, Telegram, and Minecraft will start letting users sign in using a World ID. The 2.0 upgrade will help them by making it easier to tell humans from bots.
The orb at the center
To obtain a World ID passport, a user must peer into a retina-scanning sphere, which looks like a small globe. It is called the “orb” and scans eyeballs to verify a first-time user is human. This guarantees that all World ID passport holders are unique, which could help other services who are trying to distinguish bots from humans.
Privacy and security issues
Industry leaders like Ethereum cofounder Vitalik Buterin expressed privacy concerns about the orb and its method of operation soon after Worldcoin’s launch. On the day after the launch, Worldcoin started reversing gains as members of the crypto community began to express worries related to privacy, security, and the project’s financial backing.
In defense of Worldcoin
Tools for Humanity has attempted to assuage concerns, insisting Worldcoin only uses eye scans to verify users the first time and doesn’t save them. The company also claims World ID is privacy-friendlier compared to conventional authentication systems because passport holders can verify they are human without disclosing their identity.
Use cases
Subreddit moderators can use World ID to give verified humans special permissions or specific roles. Merchants providing discount codes on Shopify can use it to make sure a buyer only gets a certain discount once.
How popular is World ID?
According to Tools for Humanity, almost five million users have obtained World IDs by scanning their eyes since the orb was unveiled two years ago. Today, Worldcoin’s main product is a universally accessible crypto wallet app, which gives verified ID holders special access.
