There’s more data in the world than anyone knows that to do with, and indeed, in the coming years we’re going to see a greater demand for advanced data analysts. There are some people, however, who already know what they want to do with data: they want to use it to commit crimes. Data related crime has been rising considerably in recent years, and it doesn’t show any signs of slowing down any time soon. As such, it’s imperative that you take time to keep your most important data secure. Below, we take a look at four ways to do this.

Secure the Area

Most people think that data related issues always happens in the digital world, but this isn’t true. It can happen in the old fashioned way: breaking and entry. With all of your company’s finances at risk, it’s vitally important that you’re making access to your site as difficult as possible. A secure, keypad door entry will be a good starting point, as will motion sensing lighting and CCTV cameras. You should also keep any valuables out of sight; sometimes criminals enter for the expensive goods but use the opportunity to steal personal data.

Who Has Access?

As much as you’d like to think otherwise, the fact is that the vast majority of crime that’s committed against a company comes from one of their employees. As such, you’ll want to take some steps to ensure it’s not one of your own gang who causes you problems. For starters, you’ll want to hire correctly and verify any and all references they submit with their application. You’ll also want to restrict access just to employees who need the data. In some cases, a “two employee” system – in which one can’t access data without the other – may be necessary.

Deleting Forever

It’s important to remember that it’s not just the digital side of your data that might cause you trouble. There’s a reason why people are told to completely rip up their credit card statements and the like before throwing them away: even with the minimal amount of information that’s on there, criminals can steal an identity. Because your finances will be more appealing to criminals than an individual’s, you must take steps to ensure they can’t get your data by rifling through your trash. Look at buying a shredder from FilmsourceInc.net, and make sure that all your documents are completely destroyed before they leave your site. There are also shredders available that can destroy CDs and hard drives, too.

When Offsite

From time to time, you’ll need to travel with work supplies. This is where most data hacks take place! Make sure you’re always keeping a close eye on your belongings, and resist the temptation to join unsecured wifi networks; it’s incredibly easy for a person to get your important data this way.

Keeping your data safe should be an ongoing project. Every few months, review your operations, and make any changes if you spot some weak spots.
