Renowned decentralized blockchain TRON has announced that its blockchain will feature commission-free transactions for Tether’s USDT stablecoin.

According to Justin Sun, Tron founder and CEO, the blockchain will allow USDT transactions without gas fees. Speaking on his X account, Sun assured Tron users that the blockchain is willing to enable smoother and more affordable transactions.

Sun also invited wallets and teams willing to support the feature to contact JustLend, the decentralized autonomous organization and lending platform of the TRON blockchain.

There was a time when Tron (TRC-20) was considered the most affordable blockchain for USDT transactions. It was considered cheaper compared to its counterpart, the ERC-20 USDT on the Ethereum blockchain. However, since early this year, Tron has become one of the most expensive options for USDT transactions and payments.

Tron: One of the Most Expensive Blockchains For Stablecoins

Data from Tether’s GasFeesNow page reveals that TRC-20 gas fees are among the most expensive blockchains that support stablecoins. Currently, gas fees on Tron range between $3.50 and $6, staggering figures compared to Ethereum’s $0.40 per transaction. The page notes that gas fees on the blockchain are complex, needing “energy” and “bandwidth.”

MOREOVER, data from Tether indicates that the surge in TRC-20 gas fees started late in 2024 and reached above $9 per transaction in December. Following the increase, users complained that Tron was no longer a cheap option for USDT transfers.

Interestingly, the blockchain has been developing gas-free transaction features since mid-July 2024. At the time, Justin Sun revealed that plans were in motion to enable gas-free stablecoin transfers, with the fees expected to be covered by the stablecoin itself.

According to the founder, the rollout of the gas-free transaction feature would “greatly facilitate” large companies in launching stablecoin services on the blockchain and would take adoption to a new level.
