Sam Altman’s World project surpassed 10 million human verifications on January 10, 2025.

The Rise of World Project: From July 2023 to January 2025

World, formerly known as Worldcoin, launched in July 2023 to create a global digital identity system and cryptocurrency distribution network. This is driven by innovative iris-scanning technology, called the “Orb,” to verify unique human users.

The latest version of the “Orb,” revealed in October 2024, boasts enhanced processing power and efficiency. It enables faster verifications, with the company now processing one user every two seconds.

Besides its most recent milestone, it has achieved two other significant milestones.

  • In November 2024, it expanded into Brazil after successful installations in Costa Rica, Poland, and Austria.
  • In December 2024, it introduced World Chain, a layer-2 network on the Ethereum Superchain.

The company, however, has faced scrutiny from privacy advocates and regulators in various countries. For example, in August 2023, Kenya suspended Worldcoin’s activities and launched an investigation into its practices.

Similarly, in December 2024, German data protection authorities ordered World to delete specific data, citing non-compliance with GDPR.

Despite the challenges, World adapted its approach, focusing on enhanced data protection measures and transparent communication about its practices.

Future Implications of the Milestone

The world’s success in verifying human identities at scale offers a potential solution to the growing problem of distinguishing between humans and AI online.

Furthermore, the widespread adoption of World IDs could pave the way for innovative approaches to universal basic income and financial inclusion.

World Chain, the L2 solution, may also address Ethereum’s scalability issues. This could also pave the way for other blockchain projects seeking to balance security with transaction speed and volume.

World’s achievement signifies a growing acceptance of innovative approaches to digital identity. As AI continues to reshape our digital landscape, projects like World may play a crucial role in maintaining the distinction between human and artificial entities.
