- EOS is among the most environmentally friendly blockchains in the world
- Its annual carbon footprint is just 242 tons of CO2, completely offset since 2018
The EOS Network Foundation (ENF) announced an initiative to become the world’s first climate-positive blockchain, in collaboration with Upland and Aerial. ENF’s architectural design combines record-breaking throughout and scalability and low power consumption.
The first carbon-neutral blockchain
EOS ranks among the most environmentally friendly blockchains in the world. Its annual carbon footprint is just 242 tons of CO2, a figure that it has offset completely in the past five years. ENF Founder and CEO Yves La Rose commented:
As EOS celebrates 5 years since becoming the world’s first carbon-neutral blockchain, we are thrilled to take our sustainability efforts one step further by going climate positive. This remarkable achievement goes well beyond our initial sustainability goals for carbon neutrality by offsetting more than 3x the carbon footprint of the EOS Network.
Recognizing the importance of carbon offsetting
ENF sought partnerships with Upland, a metaverse super app that simulates numerous aspects of the real world, and Aerial, a cutting-edge sustainability platform. This is in recognition of the significance of carbon offsetting in reducing blockchain’s environmental impact.
Upland has been an active participant in EOS’ sustainability efforts since 2021, including as a carbon offset sponsor. The platform’s sustainability efforts include offsetting its carbon footprint for the cloud services powering its metaverse. Upland Chief of Staff Danny Brown-Wolf said:
Upland has been committed to environmental sustainability since the day we started. We’re proud to help EOS become a climate-positive blockchain network.
ENF aims to inspire blockchain-related entities across the globe to adopt climate-positive strategies while actively mitigating carbon emissions. Their partner Aerial supports verified environmental efforts all over the world. Aerial CEO Andreas Homer concluded:
Partnering with the EOS Network Foundation and Upland in this climate positive initiative is an important milestone in the sustainability journey of the blockchain industry. We are honored to collaborate with such forward-thinking organizations that are dedicated to environmental responsibility and making significant positive changes.
