  • Apple is currently developing its own AI technology
  • Samsung also banned ChatGPT and other generative tools
  • Employees had uploaded a sensitive code to the bot

Apple has banned its employees from using the highly publicized artificial intelligence (AI) bot ChatGPT over data leak fears, Cointelegraph wrote, citing a report by the Wall Street Journal.

According to the report, Apple prohibited the use of ChatGPT and similar AI tools in an internal document. Apple is currently developing its own AI technology.

Restrictions on software code writing

Apple expressed concern in the document that employees would inadvertently expose classified company data while using the programs and bots.

It stated that use of GitHub’s AI tool Copilot would be restricted as well. This is an app owned by Microsoft that writes software code automatically.

ChatGPT debuted in the App store yesterday

Surprisingly, the restriction comes just one day after the ChatGPT app appeared in the App store for iOS. It’s available for iPad and iPhone users in the US at the moment, but Apple has plans to make it accessible in other countries in the weeks to come. An Android version is also in the works.

Joining the ranks of Samsung, Citigroup, BoA

Apple is far from the only Big Tech giant to ban internal use of ChatGPT. Samsung banned the use of ChatGPT and all other generative tools on May 2. Earlier, Samsung employees had uploaded a “sensitive code” to the bot, not realizing what consequences their actions would have.

Corporate management was quick to react, warning employees who used such apps on their personal phones or tablets to refrain from uploading any company data. They threatened severe punishments, including “termination of employment.”

Bank of America, JPMorgan, Citigroup, and Goldman Sachs have banned their employees from using generative AI tools like ChatGPT as well.

Implications of AI tools like ChatGPT

ChatGPT has impacted almost every facet of life since it came to be, and not always in the best way. In February, Bankless Times wrote about a scam involving fake tokens with the AI tool’s name, which were not officially associated with the chatbot.
