- Bob Lee was stabbed to death on April 4
- It's believed the attack was not random
The San Francisco Police Department has arrested a suspect in connection with the stabbing and subsequent death of Bob Lee, which was being investigated as a homicide, CoinTelegraph reported. Lee, best-known for creating Cash App, was killed on April 4.
The tech executive, Nima Momeni, is in custody after search and arrest warrants were executed in San Francisco and nearby Emeryville, the SFPD said in an April 13 press conference.
Perpetrator and victim knew each other
SFPD chief Bill Scott said there was proof Momeni and Lee knew each other, but investigations are still pending. He did not comment on the motive of the murder.
Not a random attack
Lee’s death by stabbing sent shockwaves through the crypto world. According to news reports at the time, the attack was not random. San Francisco is a dangerous city with a lot of crime, but the stabbing happened in a safe neighborhood according to former UFC fighter Jake Shields.
The charges Momeni will face are not clear at the present time, but many believe he should stand trial for murder, including San Francisco Mayor London Breed.
The chain of events
Lee was killed at around 2:35 am local time on April 4. He was found with apparent stab wounds. Officers arrived on the scene and rendered aid, and also called medics to the scene.
The victim’s wounds were life-threatening. He was taken to a local hospital, but he died despite efforts by first responders and other medical staff.
In loving memory
Apart from developing Cash App, Lee will be remembered as the CTO of Block, formerly Square, and the chief product officer of MobileCoin.
Lee was a staunch supporter of cryptocurrencies. When he joined MobileCoin at the end of 2021, he said:
The traditional financial system leaves behind hundreds of millions of ‘unbanked’ people worldwide and consequently excludes them from the associated benefits.
