- Shipyard is a Beta space for developers to access funding, build and stress-test Privacy Enhanced Applications
- It grants builders the resources and tools to extend nation-level privacy protections to ordinary people
Nym, a platform introducing the next generation of privacy infrastructure, has announced the launch of Nym Shipyard, a Beta space for developers to access funding, build and stress-test Privacy Enhanced Applications (PEApps), Bankless Times learned from a press release.
Extending national privacy to ordinary users
Shipyard grants builders both the resources and tools to extend nation-level privacy protections to ordinary people as rapidly as possible. To this end, Shipyard has no launched with NymConnect (beta), a one-button application enabling people to easily privacy enhance their ordinary applications.
NymConnect turns regular apps into PEApps – privacy-enhanced applications, by sending communications encrypted through several layers of nodes that mix and obscure traffic patterns and IP, even from the app itself. NymConnect can be used out-of-the-box to privacy-enhance the Electrum wallet and Keybase.
Telegram is next to become PEApp
Shipyard is distributing a first round of Shipyard grants for builders to integrate additional apps, with Telegram being next on the list to becoming a PEApp! Soon ordinary people will be able to use Telegram knowing their communications patterns cannot be monitored.
As the community sets up more service providers, Nym Connect will be able to privacy-enhance an increasing number of already existing 3rd party applications by sending their traffic through the mixnet and obscuring communications patterns – even from the app itself.
Shipyard is for testers and early adopters of Beta releases. NymConnect is experimental software, so it should not be relied on for strongest anonymity.
Nym Innovation offers grants up to $300m
Shipyard offers development grants for ambitious projects that seek to take advantage of the privacy infrastructure stack. Specifications for larger grants applications are being rolled out over the course of the next month.
The grants act as an onramp to larger funding: successful projects can apply for increasingly large sums, graduating to pitch for investment from the $300M Nym Innovation fund as reported earlier this summer.
Jaya Brekke, CSO of Nym Technologies, commented:
Nym Shipyard opens up the privacy-enhancing benefits of the Nym ecosystem to developers of all kinds and early adopters. Anyone looking to increase their privacy offerings can apply for a grant and build out their product. We’re excited to see what amazing ideas come from users harnessing the power of Nym.
