Safari browser beats Chrome to top North America mobile browser market with 50% dominance

  • Currently, Apple has a commanding 50% share of that market.
  • However, Chrome remains the browser of choice across all platforms boasting a 60% usage.

Safari dominates Chrome in the battle for North America’s dominant mobile browser. According to Bankless Times’ analysis, Apple’s Safari Browser commands the North American mobile browser market with a market share of 50%. Its closest challenger Google Chrome on its part holds 43.91% of the same market.

The two aren’t the only ones angling for the top spot, though! Several other players are trying to get a piece of this pie, including Samsung Internet, which has a market share of 3.94%. Meanwhile, Firefox has a 1.22% share, while Opera and Edge have 0.45% and 0.23%, respectively.

“Safari has earned this dominance by keeping up with the evolution of the internet,” says Jonathan Merry, BanklessTimes’ CEO. He continued, “The browser has adapted itself to meet changing user demands and expectations. It has several stand-out features that endear it to many users.”

So what makes the Safari browser tick?

Safari is one of the most secure browsers available today. It derives that quality from Apple’s pro-privacy stance. The firm has integrated privacy and security features in all browsers enabling users to stop data trackers.

That feature guarantees users peace of mind from intrusive adverts. The feature has been so effective that even big tech firms like Facebook and Google have complained about it. The duo is among many other firms that rely heavily on advertising revenues.

Another factor working for Safari is its integration with Apple devices such as the iPhone and iPad. The browser comes as the default internet search app in all Apple’s products. iPhone remains most Americans’ (up to 55% according to some estimates) phone of choice, explaining Safari’s dominance in the mobile internet market.

Further, Safari owes its success to its speed compared with other browsers. It uses fewer memory resources and doesn’t slow down your device’s performance much. Again users can access Siri by tapping on their home button. Finally, its intuitive browsing experience and iCloud sync functionality have been important pull factors.

Chrome remains the popular browser overall

Despite Safari’s dominance in the mobile and tablet sector, Chrome remains the go-to browser overall. According to available data, it dominates 51% of the market. Safari drops to the second spot with a 33% holding. The Edge browser comes in third with a market share of 5.66%

The difference is more pronounced when it comes to the desktop market. Google’s share here stands at a staggering 59.72%. Safari follows a distant second with a browser market share of 14.19%. And following in its heels is the Edge browser, whose market share stands at almost 12%. Finally, Firefox is the other browser with a significant market share at 6.81%.

The browser “wars” will definitely intensify as the different players continually revamp their products. It’s unclear if Safari and Chrome will manage to dislodge the others from their respective perches. But one certain thing is that this will be an exciting battle to watch!
