PLBY Group, the organization behind renowned men’s lifestyle and entertainment magazine, Playboy, has released another non-fungible token (NFT) collection. The company disclosed this news through a press release on October 20, noting that its new NFT project is titled Playboy Rabbitars. Reportedly, the collection comprises 11,953 unique Rabbitars in the form of 3-D rabbit characters.
According to the news release, the Playboy Rabbitars collection seeks to honour the company’s founding year, 1953. Each NFT in the Playboy Rabbitars collection is inspired by the magazine’s iconography, heritage, and lore.
Playboy’s dedicated Web3 Innovation team teamed up with Possible Studios, and WENEW to create the Rabbitars. Through these NFTs, Playboy seeks to create a fun and valuable world for new and experienced members of the digital collectible community.
The publication further noted that each piece would serve as a key to a reimagined Playboy club. As such, the NFTs will offer owners access to benefits, such as special members-only events, merchandise, artwork, and exclusive artist collaborations.
Regarding the metaverse, the Rabbitars will live on the Ethereum blockchain as ERC-721 tokens. Playboy further disclosed that they are hosted on the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS), the metaverse’s decentralized file storage system.
Enabling a blockchain-based Playboy membership
Commenting on this NFT drop, Jamal Dauda, the VP of Blockchain Innovation at PLBY Group, said the blockchain is changing how fans and consumers interact with brands. He added that Playboy’s decision to launch NFTs is part of its effort to move out of an age of acquiring followers and into an era of creating meaningful communities where every member has a voice.
Dauda further noted that,
The Rabbitars mark the beginning of true blockchain-based membership for Playboy. Just as Playboy Club keys gave millions of members a chance to step into the sophisticated lifestyle that the Playboy brand represents, NFTs today can do the same and so much more.
Describing Rabbitars, Playboy noted that they are a rare type of rabbit that features extraordinary speed, cultural sophistication, razor-sharp intelligence, inimitable intellect, alluring fashion sense, and in some cases, sexual prowess. Each Rabbitar features over 175 traits, including, but not limited to, fur, facial hair, apparel, accessories.
Pre-sale commences October 24
The news release detailed that the NFTs will be available for purchase on the Playboy Rabbitar site. Each Rabbitar will go for 0.1953 ETH, and buyers can pay using crypto or US dollars. There will be three different sales, with the pre-sale for ETH-paying collectors coming first October 24-26. These collectors will be able to purchase up to two Rabbitars in this sale.
The public sale for collectors looking to pay in USD will start immediately after the pre-sale. However, these buyers must also have an ETH address. Finally, the public sale for collectors willing to pay in ETH will come on October 27. Unlike in the pre-sale, collectors can purchase up to 10 Rabbitars in each public sale.
It is worth noting that this is not Playboy’s first rodeo in the NFT space. The company first entered the red-hot industry in the Spring of 2021 by dropping a collection dubbed Liquid Summer.
