- The Walking Dead NFTs will go live via multiple drops, with the earliest being February 20.
- Before this, AMC joined The Sandbox to secure a plot of land for The Walking Dead in the game.
AMC TV Series, The Walking Dead, is making its second appearance in the world of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) after an initial partnership with The Sandbox. A report unveiled this news on February 2, noting that AMC intends to roll out collectibles based on the zombie apocalypse series as its final season carries on. Reportedly, the television network has teamed up with NFT startup Orange Comet for this venture.
According to the report, Orange Comet, which is co-founded by singer Gloria Estefan and retired NFL star Kurt Warner, will produce the NFTs. The NFTs will be based on the series, which has spawned 11 seasons.
Due to the long-running nature of the series, its NFT collection will feature multiple drops, with the earliest release slated for February 20. This drop will coincide with the resumption of the show following a recent hiatus. The NFT drops will comprise 3-D animations inspired by the show. Additionally, they will feature generative artwork based on leading characters from the series.
A limited Walker Access Pass
Apart from NFTs, Orange Comet will also sell a limited Walker Access Pass that grants holders exclusive access to future NFT drops this year. Reportedly, this pass will only be available for 24 hours, and the company will not release additional passes for a year.
The NFTs will be minted on Eluvio, a blockchain protocol that is EVM-compatible (Ethereum Virtual Machine). Explaining why it settled for Eluvio, AMC noted that the blockchain is efficient and eco-friendly when it comes to minting NFTs. Due to these features, Fox’s Blockchain Creative Labs used it for Masked Singer NFTs. WWE also tapped this technology.
On the other hand, Orange Comet has also worked with the professional NHL teams the New York Islanders and Seattle Kraken.
Although AMC initially entered the NFT world with a partnership with The Sandbox, it is worth noting that this will be the first NFT drop based on the television series. The collaboration with the Sandbox only saw AMC secure a parcel of land in the metaverse game. Its lot of land features block recreations of familiar TV characters.
AMC shares The Sandbox’s land with thousands of plot owners, including Rapper Snoop Dogg, Warner Music Group, and Adidas, among others.
