The real identity of the creator of Bitcoin remains shrouded in mystery. While many conspiracy theories claim to have identified Nakamoto, none have come close to being remotely convincing.
Now, we have another contender on the scene, supposedly claiming to unveil the identity of the person or group behind Bitcoin. Enter Cullen Hoback, an American film producer who has partnered with HBO and is set to release a documentary, in which he at least implicitly claims to unveil the true identity of Bitcoin’s creator.
The claim sounds as old as Bitcoin itself. But, for the sake of it, and since the full documentary has yet to be released, we can allow Hoback some space.
In a post on X, announcing the release date of his upcoming documentary, Hoback claims that he has been tracking the “person behind Bitcoin.” He goes on to urge all who want to know the identity of Bitcoin’s creator to watch it—as if it will truly reveal the identity of Satoshi Nakamoto.
While Hoback himself makes no direct claim to have actually found the “person behind Bitcoin,” several crypto media outlets have reported that the new HBO documentary, Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery, will unveil the identity of Bitcoin’s creator, Satoshi Nakamoto. Good headlines make good business!
You Can Now Watch the Official Trailer on YouTube
On Thursday, HBO released the trailer for Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery. The full documentary will be released on October 8.
In the 159-second official trailer released on YouTube, the HBO documentary hints at revealing the identity of Satoshi Nakamoto without presenting anything convincing enough to make you believe they know—or even think they know—who Nakamoto is. There’s also nothing new that you wouldn’t already know if you have an interest in crypto and have been actively reading about Bitcoin.
But that’s the basics of promoting TV shows on social media, and it could be that the actual documentary has more substance.
However, despite the hype around the documentary—which mainly comes from crypto media publications—the response to the trailer has been poor, with just about 20,000 views on YouTube.
Not to discredit the efforts of the team behind the documentary, but the trailer offers minimal informational value in helping us get closer to finding out who Satoshi Nakamoto actually is. It could have been more than a string of rhetorical statements commonly heard when discussing Nakamoto’s identity.
Hopefully, the documentary itself will offer something fresh and evidence-backed.
